Canisius’s varsity eight rowing team earned fourth place in the New York State Championships this past Saturday. The event took place on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs.
The Ava Horgan–coxswained boat had rowed to a 7:12.695 time in its initial heat, eclipsed only by Marist (6:57.007) and Colgate (7:04.824).
In the varsity eight final, Marist (6:52.080), Ithaca (6:54.356), and Colgate (6:58.995) took the podium, but a spring-best 7:04.711 time earned Canisius’s varsity eight rowing team fourth place.
Canisius’s second varsity eight team took gold in the Petite Final with its time of 7:44.005. They had clocked in at 7:47.747 in their heat.
The Griffs’ varsity four boat took fifth place in their Petite Final with a time of 9:09.729. The United States Merchant Marine Academy, D’Youville, Stony Brook, and Binghamton placed ahead of Canisius.
“We made another good step in the right direction today as a program,” head coach Kerri Brace said. “Our team is continuing to grow and learn how to race each week. We learned a lot about ourselves and our capabilities today and look forward to carrying that over into this week's training."
Canisius rowing is set to race at the West Side Rowing Club next Sunday.
