Last weekend, the track team traveled to Penn State and the YSU Mid Major Invitational.
At the Penn State National, senior Kayla Schmidt ran in the women’s mile, finishing in 5:13. Schmidt also ran in the 3000-meter race, finishing in fifth place with a time of 10:01.
Junior Jacqueline Appenheimer also ran in the women’s mile, finishing just behind Schmidt at 5:16. Appenheimer says that the reason she stays so motivated is because of her coaches and teammates because as she notes, “they constantly support you and are there for you, so you want to run well for them.” Appenheimer likes the challenge of running; she wants to continue to beat her time from the week before or beat her personal record. She states that her coaches show her the most support because “they believe in you when you don’t believe in yourself.”
On the men’s side, at the YSU Mid Major Invitational, Nathaniel Fisher set the freshman school record in the 3000-meter race, placing fourth in 8:36. Adam Kozman ran in the 5000-meter race, placing sixth in 15:49. Collin Rice also ran the 5000-meter race, and placed twelfth in 16:14. Joseph Pivarunas placed tenth in the 1000-meter race with a time of 2:37. Pat Garland set a PR as well in the 800-meter race, running in 2:02. Max Chew placed ninth in the men’s mile, running in 4:23.
For the women, Clara Sundberg set two personal records, one in the women’s mile with 5:29 and the other in the 800-meter race with 2:28. Stephanie Seyfang also set a PR in the 200-meter race in 27.74. Ella Krumpek was another runner who set a personal record, placing ninth in the 3000-meter with a time of 10:41.
The Griffs are set to return to Penn State to complete their season in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge on Feb. 8.
