Step up your style over spring break

Any minor change in the weather has me beaming at the opportunity to refresh my wardrobe, and no other season gets me more excited for new styles than spring – where we can swap baggy, bulky layers for a more bright and breezy look. Spring break is right around the corner, and if your week off isn’t going to be spent globe-trotting and beach-hopping, you might as well go shopping.

There are so many advantages to doing a style transformation over the break, but the biggest one is the time. I feel like I’ve written a million articles at this point that in some way mention how thrifting is the best way to shop for new pieces that may be out of your comfort zone, but it really is! And since spring is all about rebirth, why not give new life to someone’s old sweater? Plus, at most thrift stores, you can donate your clothes to do some spring cleaning.

But if you’re not quite looking to go out with the old and in with more of the old, a new season is a great time to try some new trends. Intricate, retro-inspired patterns are hotter than ever, and fun prints can translate to just about any item of clothes. In spring, bright colors also start to feel a little more acceptable, so dropping the neutrals and adding in some more eclectic accents is a great place to start.

I know I just said it’s time to shed off all that heavy, winter outerwear, but layering isn’t just for the cold. It's actually the secret weapon of spring fashion. Throw a light, oversized denim jacket or a neutral cardigan over a graphic tee, or add a silk scarf to a simple dress for an effortless yet chic look. This will not only help you handle those unpredictable spring temperatures, but it’s a perfect way to showcase your personal style.

Many people associate spring fashion with florals, and on top of being just another print to add to your new collection, we see florals being incorporated as a means of texture. Shirts with rose appliques on the neckline or vine-y details up the sleeves can make any outfit feel elevated and fashionable, but still springy. If you really want to go all in on spring, preppy, country club-inspired clothes are back on the racks and ready to take over your closet. The pants are cuffed, the shirts are collared, the fabric is knit and the vibes all point to spring.

Now that your wardrobe is officially spring-ified, you can use the week of no classes to kind of workshop all the clothes that you want to try out without the pressure of being seen by pretty much everyone you know. So take this time to get creative, and by the time you’re back on campus, you might just be the next Griff-Fits pick!
