Following her double Grammy win, Sabrina Carpenter announced she would be releasing a deluxe version of her newest album, “Short n’ Sweet” on Feb. 14. This new edition featured four new songs as well as “Please Please Please” featuring Dolly Parton. As a fan of Sabrina since her “Girl Meets World” and one-episode feature on “Austin and Ally” days, I was really looking forward to this album, and it did not disappoint…for the most part.
15 Minutes – The first of the deluxe tracks, and probably my third favorite. The song itself is a double entendre of what she can do in 15 minutes – part of it is about fame, and I’ll let you look up the lyrics and figure out the other part for yourself. The backing music on this song is probably my favorite out of all the songs on the album; it’s just so energetic and stays stuck in my head all day.
Please Please Please (feat. Dolly Parton) – Unfortunately, my least favorite of the new songs. I love Dolly Parton, but out of all of Carpetner’s songs she could have featured on, I feel like this was not the right choice. Parton’s voice does not quite fit the sound of this song, and as TikTok has been quick to point out, it sounds like she is creeping up behind you as she sings. “Slim Pickins” was right there, Sabrina. This could’ve been amazing. There is something to consider with Parton’s husband’s own preference to “stay inside,” as the song talks about, but vocally, this was not it.
Couldn’t Make It Any Harder – My second favorite of the newest tracks! Some people mentioned that it sounded like “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from Grease, and I couldn’t agree more. Carpenter covered this song at either one of her concerts or while opening for Taylor Swift, and it was an amazing cover, so now it’s so exciting that she has her own song that sounds so similar. She should really sing more music of this style, as it fits her voice so well!
Busy Woman – This is my favorite track on the deluxe album, and honestly probably one of my favorite Sabrina Carpenter songs of all time. The chorus is so catchy and the lyrics are so fun. Of all of the songs – aside from “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder” – this shows off her vocal range and abilities the best of the new songs.
Bad Reviews – I can’t lie: I haven’t really heard this song a lot, so I don’t have a ton to say about it. It’s the shortest of the vault songs, though not the shortest of the album as a whole. Lyrically, it’s a fun song but there just isn’t a lot to it. I hate to give it a bad review, but it just doesn’t really leave a lasting impression on me, and I wish she had ended the album with another song; I think “15 Minutes” would’ve been a great one to leave off on.
All in all, I think that these were excellent additions to “Short n’ Sweet” and pretty good songs overall. Carpenter also extended her Short n’ Sweet Tour (It’s even sweeter!) to include two new dates in Toronto this upcoming Nov. 10 and 11. As someone who went to the earlier Toronto date, I highly recommend going if you are able; she puts on an excellent show.
