Senior Day was full of celebration for the women’s soccer team this past Saturday, Oct. 19, as the Griffs took home another win, this time against MAAC rival Sacred Heart. For head coach Ryan Louis, it was certainly a day worth celebrating.
“This class in particular is really special to me because they were my first recruits. We’ve had lots of ups and downs, but I feel like when we all came in, [compared] to where we’ve got the program now, it’s a testament to them and the hard work and development we’ve seen from them over the last four years. Senior Day is really special to me and I’m glad we have the opportunity to celebrate these ladies and the success they’ve had. Obviously, we hope it doesn’t end anytime soon, as we’re in a great position right now,” remarked Louis.
The Griffs officially clinched their ticket to the playoffs after the game against the Pioneers with the 2–1 win. Goals from senior Emma Oliphant and grad student Alicia Zamora helped lead the team, with Zamora extending her program record for penalty kick goals to five on the season.
“This is three seasons in a row now that we’ve made the playoffs, so it’s unbelievable for the women’s soccer team, it’s something we’re really excited about. Now that we’ve clinched it as early as we have, it probably allows us to prepare a little bit differently than how we normally do things,” stated Louis.
Next up for the Golden Griffins is a matchup at Fairfield against the Stags on Oct. 26, followed by their home game against local rival Niagara on Oct. 30. This Battle of the Bridge matchup will also serve as their breast cancer awareness game, pink attire is encouraged for all attending.
