Rowing looks to build on success with new head coach

By Ryan Patota, Sports Contributor

Following the departure of seven-year head coach Kerri Brace, the Canisius rowing team needed to move forward with a new coach at the helm. Matt Cossmann, the assistant coach during the program’s last three seasons, has helped the team successfully transition from one coach to another.

Head Coach Cossmann is pleased with what he calls a “smooth transition,” with how his first season has gone so far. He explains, “I think overall, as a team, we have gotten very lucky with the weather, being nice and calm in the morning where we are practicing; it has helped us get faster and better.”

The Griffs competed this past weekend at the Yinzer Cup, as they raced against George Mason and host, Robert Morris, at the Midge McPhail Boathouse in Pittsburgh. The team began the day with the 2V8 race, where the A boat placed first with a time of 17:21.5, followed by the B boat in second with a time of 18:12.6. In the V8 race, Canisius finished first with a time of 16:11.7.

“I was very pleased with our performance this past weekend with our boats creating good rhythm and that allowed us to have success,” Cossmann explained.

The team will head to the other side of Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, where they will compete in their final and biggest regatta of the fall season at the 54th annual Head of the Schuylkill this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m.
