The Canisius women’s rowing team capped off their fall schedule by competing in their biggest regatta of the season at the 54th annual Head of the Schuylkill this Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Golden Griffins began their weekend with a sixth place finish in the Women's Novice Eight, with junior Madison Vekich pacing the boat to a time of 14:46.573. In the 2v8 event, the Griffs clocked a time of 14:22.165, taking 33rd place.
Cansius capped off their afternoon in the Women’s Championship Eight, led by junior Francesca DiCamillo, where the team notched an 18th place finish in the 22-team field with a time of 13:37.684.
With the fall season now in the books, Head Coach Matt Cosmann hopes that the team’s desire for success carries into the spring season. “Everyone has been really receptive to getting better,” says Cosmann. “The whole team has been committed to [rowing] better, and getting fitter on land.”
After welcoming their freshman recruits and walk-ons, Cosmann says that he is excited to get everyone integrated into the larger, varsity group. “A different hierarchy will start to materialize. The new girls will push the returning girls, and the whole team will get faster as a result."
The team’s focus now moves to their shorter, head-to-head races, where the team shifts from rowing at a lower stroke rate for longer periods of time, to higher stroke rates for shorter periods of time.
