Mikey Takacs finishes first in the Little Three Championship.

By Peter Neville, Assistant Sports Editor

Entering his second Little Three Championship, sophomore golfer Mikey Takacs finished the tournament as co-champion this past Tuesday, marking the first time a Griff has won since Hunter Sagar back in 2014.

Takacs credited his off-season mobility work as a key factor in securing his first tournament win of his collegiate career. “I got into a routine where I would do pretty extensive stretching about three times a week. I noticed right away that I seemed to gain a lot of distance with my driver and my game was just more consistent overall while doing mobility,” he said.

Takacs finished the second round with a cumulative score of two shots under par, tying with Michael Bucko of St. Bonaventure on the individual leaderboards. Two other Griffs also finished in the top four: senior Ryan Edholm and sophomore Jake Dantonio, who finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

“Jake and Ryan are two guys you can always count on to put up a good score for the team,” said Takacs. “Unfortunately I didn't get to see a lot of the shots from either of them that day, but knowing how great they can both play, it could have been any of us that ended up in first place.”

As a team, the Griffs narrowly finished in second place behind St. Bonaventure, with a cumulative score of 587, just eight shots behind the Bonnies, who would go on to win their eighth consecutive Little Three Championship.

As the Griffs head into their penultimate tournament of the fall season, Takacs is setting his sights high for the team the rest of the way. “For the team, this tournament shows we have the skill and talent to compete with anyone we will go up against for the rest of the year,” he said. Takacs also told us, “I think it is just a matter of timing for us all to play well at the same time and as a team we can win in any tournament, especially the MAAC championship.”

The Griffs' next tournament, the Matthews Auto Collegiate, tees off at the Links at Hiawatha in 16 days on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m., as the team looks to build on their strong performance against their rivals.
