The Golden Griffins traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a mid-week matchup against the nationally ranked Michigan Wolverines, where they suffered a 21–5 loss to kick off their campaign.
Although the score reflects a lack of offensive opportunities for the Griffs, senior captain Jackson Webster was able to net four goals, while defensively, junior goalkeeper Tommy Kunz was able to notch 11 saves in his 2024 campaign.
Other notable plays came from sophomore Micah Hanson, who put up nine faceoff wins in the center circle, and senior Keegan Kozack, who added the only other goal for the Griffs.
The team knew going into the game this matchup was a tough one to beat, as are many of their non-conference games. “The team was prepared for the tough competition ahead and just went into it with a positive attitude,” said head coach Mark Miyashita. Overall the Griffs’ experience facing a top powerhouse program allows for the offense and defense to catch a glimpse of the tough competition they may encounter, even in a conference like the MAAC.
With this being just one game into the season, it’s a quick turnaround for the Griffs as they once again face a strong, non-conference opponent this week with Bellarmine. This will be the third meeting between the two teams, with the teams having an even split in the series win column.
Miyashita said his team is eager to get back to work, focusing on adjusting the little things, as well as revving up their pace of play: ”We were just a yard or step away every time against Michigan, so we look to tune up the little things to see more success.”
In order to see success this weekend, the team must play a full 60 minutes, avoid Bellarmine’s long scoring runs and limit any momentum for anyone but themselves.
Coach Miyashita and his team travel to Kentucky to face the Bellarmine Knights this Saturday, faceoff is at 12 p.m.
