Canisius sophomore Matteo Giampa was named a nominee for this season’s Hobey Baker Award, given to the NCAA hockey player who best “exhibits strength of character both on and off the ice” and “contributes to the integrity of the team and displays outstanding skills in all phases of the game.”

Giampa, who was named a finalist for both the Hobey Baker Award and Tim Taylor Award last season as a freshman when he finished the year with 18 goals and 17 assists, also won the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year award.

This season, Giampa has been one of the best players in Atlantic Hockey, with six goals and 15 assists through his first 22 games.

The first phase of fan voting for the Hobey Baker runs through Mar. 10, with the shortlist of 90 players being narrowed down to 10 finalists before a winner is chosen.
