When the United Students Association (USA) senate met on Friday, Feb. 7, the session was gaveled in with a bang at 2:36 p.m., and ended with a tailgate co-hosted by C-Block to celebrate last weekend’s Super Bowl. With pizza, wings, Canisius Athletics-themed trivia and a prize wheel to look forward to, the meeting was rather brief.

The portion dedicated to general student concerns ran much longer than usual, mostly focusing on campus police’s role on campus in light of “executive actions to advance [President Trump’s] mass detention and deportation agenda,” as an article by Vera.org explained. Vice President of Business and Finance Gabrielle Kaderli noted that these issues were covered at a recent Canisius Conversations event, where Campus Police Chief Clayton Staton reiterated that if confronted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on campus, Campus Police should be notified immediately. Kaderli also mentioned later, in her executive report, that applications to join USA’s Finance Board have been extended until Sunday, Feb. 16, and that they will meet on Thursdays at 6 p.m. on an as-needed basis.

Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, Aaron Hall, noted in his report that senate meetings will now be displayed on Griff Connect and Campus Groups, and that students can earn Petey Points by registering for and attending USA’s weekly meetings. On the note of student involvement, Executive Vice President Analee DeGlopper mentioned that she will soon be releasing senator applications, urging all students to keep an eye on their email for further communication.

Dining Services Liaison Marja’e Johnson made note of a correction that needed to be issued following The Griffin’s last edition. We reported, “new hot food vending machines that may be added to Canisius in the future, including a pizza machine.” Johnson clarified that replacing the Blendi smoothie machines with a pizza vending machine was merely a concept she was throwing out to the senate, and not a change that was set to be implemented. She also added that the “pizza machines” are not something that Canisius would even be able to install on campus, closing with a reminder that students can use the Dine On Campus app or website to express concerns and leave suggestions.

After the senate’s discussion ended, tailgate festivities commenced.

The senate was no match against their Speaker of the Senate and C-Block E-board Member Paige Apps in the heated game of Canisius Athletics trivia, hosted by Mike Kochcynski, Assistant Athletic Director for Revenue Generation and Fan Engagement. With USA fired up and well-fed, there’s much to look forward to at their next senate meeting in Grupp on Friday, Feb. 14, at 2:30 p.m.
