The United Student Association (USA) met for their weekly meeting last Friday, Jan. 31.
The meeting, which was gaveled into session at 2:33 p.m., began with general student concerns. Vice Speaker of USA Ryan Harrington brought up the lack of gluten-free food options at Canisius. Vice Speaker Harrington wrote about that topic in last week’s edition of The Griffin – a complete representation of his concerns can be found there. During the discussion, Harrington agreed to join USA’s dining committee.
The next order of business during the meeting was executive reports. President Tim Sanders was not present at the meeting since he was in Syracuse for a student leadership conference. But, via proxy – in this case Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Aaron Hall – Sanders expressed the need for students on the school’s safety committee. Anybody interested should reach out to Tim Sanders or Dr. Harold Fields.
The rest of executive reports went by without much incident, but each executive gave a shout-out to Diversity Chair Leyla Akil for her successful Freedom Mic event, covered in last week’s edition of The Griffin.
The aforementioned Diversity Chair Akil began the cabinet report section of the meeting, announcing that the Diversity Committee would set its focus on Black History Month. Next, Public Health Chair Daeshyon Riley announced a self-love event on Feb. 13, featuring affirmations put on sticky notes put up around campus.
Next came liaison reports. Dining Services Liaison Marja’e Johnson spoke about the new Blue and Gold Cafe, and how it does not accept meal swipes. Johnson said it was a University decision. Johnson also talked about new hot food vending machines that may be added to Canisius in the future, including a pizza machine. Library Services Liaison Daeshyon Riley mentioned Monday’s meeting about the new plans for the library. The meeting was covered in depth in this week’s edition of The Griffin. Public Services Liaison Alexandra Hackett said that the public safety chief will be out of town until Feb. 11, but will schedule a meeting once he gets back.
The meeting concluded with a session of open discussion. Vice Speaker Harrington complained that the TV remote had been stolen from the commuter lounge, to which USA Advisor Jason Francey said: “I will take care of it.” After that, Anthony Tripi showed to the senate a “sick” rendering of his proposal for a TV-filled wall in Horan O’Donnell, based on last week’s senate discussion about new digital signage at Canisius. Tripi’s rendering acknowledged, Harrington spoke again, this time about the snow day that was called a couple of weeks ago in the middle of the day, saying that it was dangerous for students to cancel school so late. Francey said that such discussions are out of the power of USA, but that professors were told to “have grace” with students who showed up late or were absent because of the snow. With that, the senate adjourned at 3:11 p.m. The senate will meet next at 2:30 p.m. in Grupp on Feb. 7.
