The Canisius hockey team lost both matches against the Air Force Falcons over the weekend, unable to capitalize on the momentum from sweeping Army and scoring a combined 10 goals the week prior.
The Griffs were shut out in the first game of the series, losing 2–0. The second game saw Canisius get on the scoreboard, thanks to sophomore forward Trey Funk’s third goal of the season. Funk deflected a shot from sophomore Matteo Giampa on the power play, making the score even at one apiece in the second period. The Griffs conceded a late third period goal, as the Falcons found the back of the net with just 55 seconds remaining in regulation, ultimately leading to a 2–1 loss.
Head Coach Trevor Large shared his thoughts on the weekend series. “Overall, I thought Air Force was very good defensively. [The Falcons] took away a lot of options for us and we were not able to get a lot of scoring chances,” he explained.
Even after getting swept, Coach Large was pleased with the effort from his team. “I thought our goaltending was very strong. We played tough and physical throughout in a tough place to play in, but we need to get back to scoring more to relieve some stress off the defense and goaltending going forward. I think we need to hang on to the structure and commitment [on defense], and on offense, we need to create scoring chances and take advantage.”
The Griffs fall to 3–2 in AHA play and 3–8 overall on the season. Canisius will look to get back on track next weekend, in a series against the Mercyhurst Lakers at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, PA. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday Nov. 21 and 5 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 22.
