Canisius hockey dropped to 9–8–2 in conference play after losing both games in their series against Holy Cross last weekend. The losses leave Canisius in sixth place in the AHA, narrowly ahead of this weekend’s opponent, Air Force, which sits just four points behind Canisius.
In game one against Holy Cross, Canisius narrowly lost 3–2 in overtime. Cole Kodsi opened the scoring in the first period, but two goals from the Crusaders gave them the lead heading into the third period. Alec Cicero continued Canisius’ power-play success, tying the game early in the third. In an overtime period dominated by the Crusaders, Matt DeBoer scored the winning goal for Holy Cross on the power play.
In game two, Holy Cross jumped out to an early lead and never relented. Liam McLinskey scored his first of two goals on the night early in the first period before a duo of power-play goals in the second period by Jack Seymour and McLinskey once again gave Holy Cross a lead they would not relinquish. Captain Matt Vermaeten scored a consolation goal for Canisius, his fourth of the season, in the 4–1 loss.
Next up for Canisius, they travel back to Buffalo for the first time since Jan. 11, where they will take on Air Force. The Falcons, who swept Canisius earlier in the year, are coming off six straight losses, having dropped series against Army, Holy Cross and RIT before taking the long flight from Colorado to Buffalo. Senior forward Clayton Cosentino leads the Falcons offensively this season, tallying five goals and 16 assists thus far.
The puck drops in this weekend's series at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 4 p.m. on Saturday as Canisius looks to keep their spot in the AHA standings secure ahead of their matchup against Niagara in the Battle of the Bridge next week.
