Opening the 2022 outdoor season, the Golden Griffins Track and Field team took action at the SUNY Geneseo Season Invitational in Geneseo, N.Y. The team performed well for their first weekend outside, posting several top-ten finishes.
For the men, there were five Canisius runners to take top-ten finishes in the 1,500 meter run. Taking fourth, junior Andrew Perreault came in with a time of 3:56.45. Senior Michael Peppy came close behind Perreault, crossing the finish line with his personal-best time of 3:57.69, to take fifth. Then fifth-year senior Turner Dirrigl and senior Richard Moore both came in with personal-best times, coming in fifth and sixth place respectively, with times of 4:02.22 and 4:03.93. Junior Tom Appenheimer finished in ninth place, with a time of 4:06.25. Dirrigl placed fifth and Peppy placed eighth with respective times of 1:57.93 and 1:59.45, in the 800-meter run.
On the women’s side, sophomore Maura Jordan had a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.44. Junior Marissa Silba and senior Libby Benzer ran personal-bests in the 800-meter run, taking ninth and tenth place with times of 2:24.81 and 2:25.94, respectively. Benzer additionally ran a personal best in the 1,500-meter run, with a finishing time of 4:44.17, taking first place in the event. Silba trailed in third place also with a personal-best time of 4:47.94. Junior Olivia Moran took a tenth place finish in the event, crossing the finish line at 4:57.59. Freshman Taylor Heschke took third place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:21.89. Sophomore Katie Gawronski got a seventh place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:09.78.
The Griffins will next compete at the University at Buffalo in the Buffalo Spring Opener, which will begin at 1 p.m.
