Griffs’ confidence soars as non-conference action ends

Freshman Katie Adams led the women’s lacrosse team with five goals against Central Michigan this past Wednesday in the Griffs’ 14–13 loss, the most goals scored in one game by a player this season.

As non-conference games have now drawn to a close, it’s safe to say that the Griffs have grown in their capabilities as a team, both on and off the field. Over the course of the last five weeks, head coach Russell Allen has stressed the importance of the underclassmen–heavy team boosting their confidence and stepping into new roles.

Along with Adams, many other players have stepped up in big moments so far this season. Sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald leads the team in both goals and points, followed closely by juniors Maggie Tifft for goals and Meg Hiltz for points. Multiple other freshmen have also laid claim to goals over the past few weeks, such as Mia Estelle, Taylor Wolf and Brooke Hippert.

Goalkeeper Olivia Licardi was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Griffs with a total of 24 saves in last week’s two victories over Le Moyne and Robert Morris. The match against the Colonials saw a career-high 16 saves from the sophomore.

MAAC play for the Griffs starts on Saturday, March 22 against Mount St. Mary’s at noon. Canisius currently ranks fourth in the MAAC at the end of non-conference play with a 3–5 overall record.
