The Canisius baseball team earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Mercyhurst to end their 10-game losing streak.

Senior pitcher Ethan Hennessy was credited with the save after he retired all three batters in the ninth inning, while pitcher Joe LoPinto was credited with the win after he held Mercyhurst scoreless through three innings in relief. The Canisius pitchers finished the game strong, shutting out the Lakers in the last five innings and totaling 13 strikeouts amongst the five players who pitched.

Freshman Bennett Cox changed the landscape of the game after hitting a two-run home run, helping the Griffs get a crucial two runs on the board in the fourth inning. JC Spinosa went 2–3 at the plate and scored a run off of an error, leaving the Griffs one run behind. Thomas Zwirecki and Owen Silliman’s sacrifice flyouts helped score two runs to put the Griffs in front of the Lakers and eventually win the game.

The Griffs next travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to play the Merrimack Warriors this weekend to start conference play.
