The Griffs golf team took ninth place overall at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, scoring an average of +7 over the two rounds.
With sophomore Mikey Takacs and senior Ryan Edholm both shooting par on day two, they led the team in scores and both finished in the top 25, Takacs in 17th and Edholm in 23rd. This marks the fourth tournament this season Takacs has scored par or better on a course.
Takacs has been a strong presence for the Griffs golf team this season, and has recorded his best scores for 18, 36 and 54 hole matches, all in his sophomore campaign. When discussing the importance of mental preparation for tournaments, Takacs emphasized the importance of “knowing [he is] good enough to be out there and compete with every person on the course. It’s just a matter of staying patient and taking each round as they come.”
As the season concludes, the team prepares for what will be their final tournament of the fall season, tweaking adjustments here and there to work to perfect their play. “Everybody on the team is always looking to improve their own game so they can better the team as a whole. Some focus on their driving, others on putting; but really, it’s just about finding that weakness and really working on it to improve week by week,” Takacs says.
With the team honing in on what they do well and embracing their areas of improvement, each week proves to be a better and better showing for the Griffs as players move up the boards at each tournament they attend. For instance, this past weekend four golfers finished in the top 55 players.
Next up for the golf team is their final tournament of the fall season, the Bucknell Invitational, starting Sunday, Oct. 13. This three-day tournament will host 18 different schools.
