Canisius teed off at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, NY last weekend in the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational. A 618 total in the 36 hole tournament placed the Griffs in eighth place overall, marking their best finish this fall. Lehigh University won the tournament with a team total 575, with two players landing in the top three on the leaderboard.
Senior Shane Broad led the Griffs once again this season with a 73 on Sunday and after eagling the last hole of the tournament, a 73 on Monday. This performance gave Broad a 146 (+2) and a top 20 finish for the sixth time in his Canisius career.
“When I played at the 1912 club, I was swinging a little too fast and wasn't able to score as well as I wanted," said Broad, "but this weekend I dialed my swing in, which allowed me to hit more greens and score lower."
Joey Maher, Canisius student athlete of the month, finished with a 154 (+10) total, which is a career low for him in a 36 hole tournament, and MAAC golfer of the month, Ryan Edholm who had his best day on Sunday with a 76(+4), finished the tournament with a 156(+12).
“Individually we have to have better course management," said Broad. "We have to find our spots on the course, and that’ll lower our scores in these tournaments."
Canisius will finish out their fall season this weekend as they travel to Lewisburg, PA for the Bucknell Fall Invitational where the Golden Griffins look to build off of several of their players' performances from last weekend.
