Former men’s basketball guard Malik Johnson has a new home.
Johnson, who played for the Griffs from 2016-20, recently signed a contract in Switzerland with Vevey Riviera Basket, also known as the Riviera Lakers, in the Swiss LNB.
A four-year starter, Johnson appeared in 131 games in his Canisius career, all starts. In his four years, he averaged 8.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game and was a three-time All-MAAC honoree. He finished his Griffs career with 1,098 points, one of 39 players in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. He is 28th on the all-time point list.
Johnson also holds the school record for assists at 644 in four years and is the only player in program history to have a combination of over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 200 steals. A leader on and off the court, Johnson was also a three-year captain, one of three in the program’s history to be a captain for three years.
“I am extremely proud of Malik, who has continued to work tirelessly toward his goal of playing professional basketball. He is a great leader and a great ambassador for our program,” Canisius basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon said in a tweet on Sunday.
Johnson is now one of 13 former Griffs currently playing professional basketball overseas, and he is the 23rd former Griff to sign a professional contract overseas in the past 15 years.
Vevey Riviera plays in the second tier of the Swiss Basketball League. The team will play its first game of the 2021-22 season on Saturday.
