Fast Fashion and Changing Perspective

In our world of consumerism, we often produce more than we can buy – and what we can't purchase typically ends up in landfills. In 2018 alone, U.S. landfills received 11.3 million tons of textiles. We’re drawn in by enticing deals or the latest trends, eager to buy the “must-have” items. But the reality is that cheaper price tags often come with reduced quality. It’s time we shift our focus to conscious consumerism and move away from fast-fashion brands like Shein and Temu. These companies don’t have our best interests at heart.

Every time I visit a thrift store, I see at least two or three items from Shein on the racks. But conscious consumerism goes beyond simply avoiding these brands; it requires a deeper look at where these items come from. Most fast-fashion companies source their products from overseas factories, where workers are paid unfair wages and are forced to work in unsafe conditions. For instance, a pair of jeans that costs you $50 to buy might only cost 90 cents to make, while the person who made them is paid only $134 a month.

So how can you stop supporting these exploitative practices? Start by changing your perspective. That shirt you bought last summer and wore only once? It’s still in great condition! If you’re craving a change in style, try visiting a local thrift store or organizing a clothing swap with friends. The pressure to keep up with the latest trends is largely driven by media and societal expectations – it’s not a reflection of what you truly need.

By altering your mindset and recognizing that you already have enough, you can save money and become a more conscious consumer. Every small step counts, and we can all contribute to putting an end to unsustainable practices. Let’s support each other as a community in making choices that benefit both people and the planet.
