Men’s and women's cross country took home two individual first place finishes at the Canisius Alumni Classic that they hosted this past weekend in Delaware Park. Overall, the team took a pair of second-place team finishes.
Senior Libby Benzer led the women's 5k with a time of 18:43.9, winning her second race of the season. Junior Marissa Silba was the second Griff to cross the finish line with a time of 19:49.0 to earn herself a seventh-place finish. Earning 74 points as a team, the Griffs took second place coming behind Daemen.
The men’s team looked great, having three Griffs take top 10 finishes. Senior Tom Appenheimer took first place with a finishing time of 25:51.2 for the 8k course. Appenheimer was a whole 20 seconds ahead of the second place runner from SUNY Geneseo. Senior Michael Peppy came in fifth place with a finishing time of 26:28.3, and sophomore Thomson Chew placed ninth coming in at 26:39.1. The men’s team also took a second-place finish with 47 points, trailing SUNY Geneseo who had 44 points.
“As far as the team competition today, we were just one or two athletes away from putting together a really solid top five,” head coach Nate Huckle told GoGriffs.com. “If we can put all of those things together in two weeks at the MAAC championships, we should be ready to roll.”
The Golden Griffs will get in their last minute training before they head to Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in just a few weeks to compete in the MAAC Championship at the ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex.
