The Canisius women’s volleyball team’s record is currently 7–9 overall and 3–2 in conference play, most recently defeating St. Peter’s University in five sets.
The team has now had three matches go to five sets this season, winning two of them. Junior Ella Bourque recorded 51 assists in the game, reaching that threshold for the third time this season. She has also notched 25 or more assists in each of the last five matches. Even with all of these stats, Ella doesn’t take the credit. She says, “I don’t get my assist without a pass first or without my hitters getting a kill, so I feel like I really can’t even take credit for my success.”
She knows she works hard and has a lot of experience, but she wants to be successful for her teammates. In order for the team to be prepared, they watch footage of the other team a couple of days before the game. She says that their coach, Tom Hanna, provides effective videos for the team to be able to watch.
Borque’s role model is her sister because her sister played college volleyball as well. Since she’s from Chicago, her parents watch all of the games online, check the teams stats and make sure to hear from her after every game. Borque says, when talking about her parents, “they’re what got me here and what brought me to Canisius.”
Both Kara Zaucha and Sofia Hedqvist recorded double-doubles in the game against SPU, and Zaucha had a team record of 17 kills and 16 digs, while also producing a team record of four total blocks during the game. Zaucha has now delivered five straight double-doubles and nine throughout the whole season.
When asked about her success, Zaucha mentioned that her family is her biggest source of support. “My family, so my parents and my siblings. My sister played college volleyball as well so she’s kind of been like my role model since I was 10 which is when I started playing. I think my parents have always been my number one supporters and always will be and they’re the reason I started playing, along with my sister and they’re what got me here, what brought me to Canisius. They’re always watching every game, always looking at all the stats, always texting me right after the game. Same with my sister and my two brothers.”
Zaucha and the Griffs are back in action on Oct. 12 against Sacred Heart at home at 1 p.m.
