Canisius introduces new scholarship

By: Katie Dusza, Contributor

Canisius’ new Buffalo Promise Scholarship promises 100% covered tuition for eligible students.

In a highly anticipated address to the Canisius community on Oct. 10, President Stoute announced a new scholarship being offered beginning in fall 2025.

The scholarship appeals to prospective undergraduate students from low to middle income families in the Buffalo area. Eligible students for the scholarship include people with 142 ZIP codes coming from a household with an income of $125,000 or less per year. Those students have the opportunity to receive fully covered tuition for up to four years. This is stacked on top of other financial aid awards.

Eligible students must submit valid New York Tuition Assistance Program and FAFSA forms by March 1, 2025. Recipients of this scholarship also need to attend Canisius for at least two years and uphold good academic standing.

Stoute spoke proudly about this scholarship, mentioning how it is a way for more people to reap the benefits of higher education regardless of economic status. The scholarship is intended to offer a way for people to connect with the Buffalo community through the community-oriented opportunities offered by the Canisius experience, in hopes that it will alleviate educational struggles that arise from a student’s financial situation.

This scholarship recognizes the talent and intelligence in the Buffalo area, but that opportunity can be scarce for many. With the city of Buffalo being a historically segregated city, opportunities can be squandered due to an institutionalized lack of resources. By offering access to higher education, Canisius shows solidarity with disadvantaged Buffalo residents by allowing people to pave a successful path for their futures.
