Bring award show fashion to your wardrobe

Hollywood’s awards season is officially upon us, with the first of them – the 2025 Golden Globes – being held about three weeks ago on Jan. 5. Echoing an expertly written article in the opinion section, we saw a lot of very similar looks at the Golden Globes. It was an overall dismal display of dress wear, but the consistency spoke volumes to the dominance these styles had at the Globes, and as a result, the dominance they likely will have over our closets in the months to come.

To further echo the opinion article by that super cool writer, the Golden Globes proved that poofy dresses are a thing of the past. Column dresses were everywhere that night. Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton. Naomi Watts in Schiaparelli. Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta. As frustrated as I was with the repetition, this hemline is a statement of simplicity and a certain vintage poise. Flowy, boho styles had their time in the sun, but we’re taking the hint our favorite celebs are sending: 2025 is shaping up to be the year of streamlined sophistication. Structured silhouettes and quiet elegance are the new golden (globes) standard in daily style.

Let's talk accessories. These minimalist gowns gave the stage to statement jewelry – chunky chokers, shoulder-dusting earrings and cuffs that doubled as conversation starters. We have to address the sparkly elephant in the room – Zendaya’s rock of an engagement ring that was revealed on this carpet. But chunky rings were added to many Golden Globes outfits, and many – like Kerry Washington in Balenciaga, Ariana Grande in Givenchy and Cristin Milioti in Rodarte – wore their jewelry over opera gloves, which is a favorite style of mine, and one that seems to be making a comeback. You can read about the impeccable accessorization of Coleman Domingo in opinion, so it’d be wrong not to sing the praises of some other men who don’t shy away from a little bling. Adrien Brody spiced up his suit with an interesting, oil spill-esque, beaded brooch; and Jeff Goldblum one-upped Brody, with multiple shiny brooches to complement his crystal-striped AMIRI suit and printed continental tie. The takeaway? Don’t underestimate the power of a bold accessory to elevate even the simplest outfits. It’s 2025, and we’re accessorizing like we mean it.

And then there were the pops of unconventional textures. Angelina Jolie’s Alexander McQueen gown had her draped in crystal chains; and Cynthia Erivo’s Louis Vuitton dress had fabric reminiscent of delicate filigree or baroque artistry, adding a layer of intrigue to the already eccentric ensemble. For everyday wardrobes, this trend of experimental materials and moving away from minimalist designs could mean pairing your go-to denim with something unexpected, like a sheer blouse or a leather jacket with soft knitwear – a subtle nod to the red carpet that’s still wearable for a Tuesday.

The start of a new year and a fresh awards season is the perfect excuse to give your wardrobe a little refresh. The red carpet reminds us that personal style isn’t about copying celebrity looks; it’s about taking those cues and adding your own twist. Fashion in 2025 isn’t about trying too hard. It’s about making smart, but bold choices and owning them. Although I know most of us aren’t going to be donning floor-length gowns for a trip to the store or to go to class, I can’t wait to see this season’s red carpet clothing infiltrate our closets.
