During rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance the protestor, who was a part of the performance, held up the Sudanese and Palestinian flags before being swiftly stopped by security.
While he was a part of Lamar’s performance, nobody was aware of this protest beforehand. The protester was ejected from the stadium, but was not charged. He has since been banned from any NFL-affiliated events and stadiums.
The protester identified himself as Zül-Qarnain Nantambu, an artist based in New Orleans. In an interview with CNN, he said that he felt inclined to perform the demonstration early into the rehearsal schedule, however did not tell anyone about his plans.
This demonstration was meant to bring awareness to the ongoing humanitarian crises in Palestine and Sudan.
Nantambu wanted to use this opportunity to spread his message to some of the most influential people in attendance at the Super Bowl, including celebrities and the president. The Super Bowl is also one of the most watched events of the year which gives anything that happens on screen a huge platform.
