On Sept. 15, the FBI began an investigation into another planned assassination attempt on Donald Trump, this time at his golf club in Florida.
The New York Times reported that while Trump was unharmed, the suspect had been hiding in the bushes for almost twelve hours with a rifle. It is uncertain whether or not they had fired any shots, but after fleeing, they were later obtained by the Secret Service and are now being held in custody.
On the scene, officials found a semiautomatic rifle with a scope and a video camera, which has led them to believe “the suspect may have planned to film the shooting,” according to The New York Times.
It has been reported by The Times that Trump “gave his Secret Service detail short notice” about his golfing excursion, which resulted in officers not conducting a scan of the area. The gunman had only been found after an agent noticed the barrel of the gun.
In an update from Sept. 16, the Secret Service found that the serial numbers on the rifle had been tampered with, making it harder to identify where it had come from.
Following the alleged assassination attempt, Elon Musk took to his social media platform X and seemingly incited violence towards President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk’s post suggested that “it was odd that nobody had tried to kill” Biden or Harris, The New York Times reported. Shortly after, he deleted the post, claiming that it had been intended as a joke.
In a later interview with Fox following the attempt, Trump had “blamed” the Biden and Harris administration, according to The New York Times. However, some have been quick to cite Donald Trump and JD Vance’s statements on gun violence after this incident occurred, like The Guardian, which recalled that Vance had gone on the record stating that shootings are a “fact of life.”
The House Task Force, which investigated the previous attempted assassination attempt against Donald Trump, will now be investigating this incident.
