Baseball goes 1-2 in weekend series against Liberty

By Andrew Nowel, Sports Reporter

The Canisius Golden Griffins baseball team took the field in Lynchburg, Virginia this past weekend wanting to build on their latest success in Washington D.C. Liberty dominated the weekend after Canisius' Friday win and even with a Griffs’ comeback on Sunday afternoon, the Flames won the series, winning on both Saturday and Sunday.

Griffs Junior Peyton Consigli took the mound on Friday afternoon and pitched an excellent outing. He went six innings with only one hit and three walks with six strikeouts, earning the win in the 4-0 victory.

Saturday’s starter for the Griffs did not have the same success as Liberty jumped to an early 4-1 lead off Redshirt Junior Justin Guiliano who ended his day in the fourth inning. The Flames built this lead to a 12-1 victory as the Canisius bats managed just three hits in the game.

The Griffs got off to an excellent start in Sunday’s game as Senior left fielder Carlin Dick homered in the first inning to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead. It was Dick’s fifth homer of the season, but the lead wouldn’t last long as Liberty scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

However, the Griffs worked their way back into the game with a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth to tie the game at three. A three-run seventh inning gave the Griffs a 6-3 lead behind Freshman second baseman JC Spinosa’s first RBI hit of his collegiate career.

The Flames responded with a big inning of their own, scoring six runs to take back the lead at 9-6. Junior Jackson Strong tied the game in the eighth inning with a three-run homer, but the Flames scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of that inning to seal the game and the series for Liberty.

The Griffs will return to Washington D.C. this upcoming weekend to rematch the George Washington Revolutionaries in a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 3pm.
