ArtsCanisius hosts a Buffalo-blooded performance for National Hispanic Heritage Month.

On Oct. 4 in Montante Cultural Center, ArtsCanisius hosted Buffalo’s staple, “Shakespeare in Delaware Park.” Partnering with Raíces Theatre Company, they hosted a performance of “Shakespeare & the Spanish Golden Age,” written by Anthony Chase, a local theater critic. This pay-as-you-wish event was organized for National Hispanic Heritage month.

“Shakespeare & the Spanish Golden Age” compares and contrasts England and Spain in the Elizabethan era. It tells its stories through references to works of Shakespeare, Cervantes and Lope De Vega. The play is currently touring through schools and community centers for Hispanic Heritage Month. For information on public showings, visit Shakespeare in Delaware Park’s website.

Buffalo’s Raíces Theatre Company embodies the values of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The word ‘raíces’ translates to ‘origins’ as the company notes on its website, raicestheatrecompany.com, to remind their community of the progress that can be made by connecting to their roots. The company does this by performing plays that highlight the experience of Latinos with their talented, inclusive casts.

This embodiment of celebrating Hispanic roots is a great way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which spans from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The start date of Sept. 15 signifies the independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This month is a crucial celebration of the endless contributions Hispanic Americans have made since the earliest days of the United States; and Chase, Raíces Theatre Company and ArtsCanisius found a way to celebrate that with Shakespeare.
