An 11–2 run from Hobart proved too much for the Canisius men’s lacrosse team to overcome in their first game of the 2025 season, falling to the Statesmen 21–12 on Saturday.
Hobart jumped out to an early 2–0 lead at home, but the Griffs responded with a few goals of their own. Tied 6–6 late in a first half filled with back-and-forth scoring, Hobart took advantage of communication problems from Canisius, scoring two goals within the last minute of play to end the first half with an 8–6 lead. Hobart took the momentum into the second half, as the Statesman scored nine goals in the third quarter alone. Down 17–8 following the conclusion of Hobart’s 11–2 run, Canisius was only able to score four goals in the fourth quarter, while the Statesmen added an extra four.
Last season the Griffs averaged 9.6 goals per game, and are looking to improve on that aspect. This season started on the right track towards that goal, with Canisius finding the back of the net 12 times. Senior TJ Buono tallied a hat trick for Canisius, while sophomore Mason Wolford added two goals and an assist. Redshirt junior Lance Williams scored twice, including his first collegiate goal, and freshman Carson Christy got his first goal as a Griff as well.
“I was pleased with the energy and intensity that we played with for 60 minutes in our first game of the season,” said Canisius head coach Mark Miyashita when asked about his offense.
“We had some communication breakdowns on some goals and made uncharacteristic errors on defense. It was a game where our communication and composure weren’t consistent enough and we need to improve on it along with our chemistry,” detailed Coach Miyashita.
The Griffs return to Canisius for their home opener this weekend, scheduled to face off against Bellarmine Knights on Saturday at noon. With the weather potentially becoming an important factor in the matchup, Coach Miyashita knows the team will need to be ready: “Just because of the limitations of the weather, we have to find a way to adjust and continue to get better on game day.” Following their game against the Knights, the Griffs will head back on the road to face LeMoyne on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
